The College of Interdisciplinary Studies has reached the 22nd year of service. We have 7 curriculums, more than 70 staffs, and more than 1,000 students. Our faculty is well-known at the national and international level and has produced various well-respected academic works. Our graduates have made a huge contribution to the society. Considering our performance, we are a big academic unit at Thammasat University. We are making gradual, but steady, progress. In pursuit of the power and promise of 21st century learning for students, the University Council has decided the new initiative to expand our College through the transformation of the curriculums, including management and administration.

I am very confident in our College of Interdisciplinary Studies that we will achieve our goals and the expectation of the university. The united Thammasat Spirits will not be separated by our three campuses, namely Tha Prachan, Rangsit, and Lampang. Every single one of us will work towards the success of the team as a whole.

2.History

Revival of ‘Moral Science Degree’

In 1994 when Thammasat University was under the rectorship of Professor Dr. Charnvit Kasetsiri, a group of senior alumni of the University of Moral and Political Sciences, a precursory college to the present-day Thammasat University, and former Moral Science degree graduates together proposed the revival of the ‘Moral Science’ degree program. Many of Thammasat University executive administrators expressed interests and explored the possibility to draft a program incorporating disciplines across Social Science and Humanities studies which resonates with contemporary needs of modern Thai society.

Establishment of Interdisciplinary Studies of Social Science Program

Between 1995 – 1998, during which Professor Noranit Setabutr was the rector of Thammasat University, the Thai government aimed to promote decentralized education administration by implementing collegiate campus expansion programs. Concurrently, provincial community of Lampang stipulated that an undergraduate degree should be established in addition to the existing postgraduate program offered by the Faculty of Political Science continually for several years. In response, Professor Dr. Anek Laothamatas, then Vice President on Academic Affairs of Thammasat University, invited the then Rector to meet with Lampang provincial community to discuss the prospect of academic program administration in the province, which would adapt the Moral Science degree program components into the campus’ undergraduate study and would be offered for the first time in the country at the time and exclusively at Lampang Campus.

Guided by the preceding Moral Science degree program syllabus, a working group led by Professor Dr. Anek Laothamatas, Associate Professor Dr. Saitip Sukatipan and Associate Professor Pornchai Trakulwaranont to conduct provincial public hearing and develop curriculum which subsequently became a fully realized Thammasat University’s new degree entitled “Interdisciplinary Studies of Social Science Program”, incorporating social science and humanities disciplines offered at undergraduate level. The courses and modules are ‘interdisciplinary studies’ across the myriad of social science and humanities, preparing the program’s graduates in becoming ‘interdisciplinary’ in working to serve the interest of Thai public and giving truth to the motto, “I love Thammasat because Thammasat teaches me to love the people”.

Bachelor of Arts Program in Philosophy, Politics and Economics

Bachelor of Arts Program in Philosophy, Politics and Economics
History

Thammasat University was founded on the conviction to create graduates who serve society and people. In its formative years, the university’s outstanding feature was the Moral Science degree which covered multi-disciplinary courses and equipped graduates with knowledge and broad understanding of issues, and applicable skills in their career as well as their academic pursuit. Undergraduate degree programs in philosophy, politics and economics (PPE) are currently offered at many institutions around the globe, aiming to provide students with knowledge and skills necessary in understanding and analyzing the complexity and interdependency of contemporary issues and require interdisciplinary approaches to evaluate the choices to resolve social and national dilemmas.

Based on the university’s founding conviction and global contemporary needs, the College of Interdisciplinary Studies introduced a bacherlor degree program in philosophy, politics and economics in 2013, the prominent components of which were multi-disciplinary courses in politics, laws and philosophical foundations to equip students with knowledge and understanding of comtemporary issues. Program graduates can develop and disseminate their analysis of comtemporary issues based on interdisciplinary knowledge and apply the knowledge to develop and resolve national problems.

The College of Interdisciplinary Studies officially launched the Bachelor of Art Program in Philosophy, Politics and Economics in 2013 at Tha Prachan Campus of Thammasat University and received overwhelming number of interested applicants. Subsequently in 2014, the program was additionally offered and opened for admission at Thammasat University, Lampang Campus.

Bachelor of Science Program in Data Science and Innovation

HISTORY

Through Thailand 4.0 policy, the Thai government envisioned the transition of the country’s traditional economy into innovation-driven economy and achieve a high-income country status. By shifting the support to New S-Curve development, investment in novel industry will transform goods and technology into the nation’s new growth engines. Workforce development is paramount in smooth transition into digital economy and society, nevertheless, Thailand is deficient in capable and highly efficient human resource to meet with the demand of Thailand 4.0 mandate.

In 2018, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation opened invitations for universities to submit degree program proposals to meet the country’s growing demand under the program entitled ‘New Graduates for New Growth Engine Industry under Thailand 4.0 Policy and Higher Education Reform 2018-2022’.

A group of data science researchers consisting of lecturers from the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Faculty of Science and Technology and lecturers from the College of Innovation collectively agreed that data science, innovation and digital transformation are the science and technology for Thailand’s future. In response to the request for proposal, the lecturers from the Faculty of Science and Technology developed the ‘Bachelor of Science Program in Data Science and Innovation’, focusing on computer, mathematics and programming whereas the lecturers from the College of Innovation developed the ‘Bachelor of Digital Transformation’. Under a jointly signed memorandum of understanding, the program is taught by lecturers from both faculties.

The Bachelor of Science Program in Data Science and Innovation was formerly offered by the Faculty of Science and Technology as the courses were then taught by the faculty’s lecturers. As a result of Thammasat University’s mandate to optimize interdisciplinary studies of social science and science and the interdisciplinary nature of the program module (mathematics, statistics, computer, artificial intelligence and business), the Bachelor Program in Data Science and Innovation was transferred to the College of Interdisciplinary Studies on 1st August 2020, in accordance with the resolution of the 11/2563 Thammasat University Council meeting dated 23rd September 2020. The program’s transition was congruent with the college’s existing interdisciplinary courses of social science e.g. philosophy, political science and economics.

Master of Arts Program in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies

Master of Arts Program in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies

History

Graduate program in women studies was originally founded through collaboration between the then Office of Graduate Volunteers and Women and Youth Studies Program of Thammasat University, who collectively recognized the need to establish a master degree program in women studies at Thammasat University during the time when such program did not exist in any university in the country. To address the severity and complexity of women and youth oppressions, the program modules have undergone revisions in tandem with other curricular activities under the Women and Youth Studies Program e.g. (cyclical) women studies conference and journal of women studies publication.

Thammasat University Council approved the program as special degree program since 2000 in accordance with Social Administration Program Regulation. Program admission commenced in 2001 and offered in bi-semester system jointly managed by the Office of Graduate Volunteers and Women and Youth Studies Program.

Since 1st October 2006, the Master of Arts Program in Women Studies has been revised and transferred to the College of Interdisciplinary Studies by the approval of Thammasat University Council. In 2013, the program was retitled as ‘Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies’ and restructured as a regular evening master degree program (non-business hour class).
